I miss it.

I miss the days that each Sunday I could sit down and review the week. I initially started the blog for our parents so they could keep up with the grandkids. After awhile, it became more than that to me...a journal of sorts that allowed me time to reflect on life as it happened.

And that is exactly why I miss it. As more and more of life keeps happening, there is less time to reflect on the life's "happenings."

I will not try a superficial attempt at "catching" up, but as I look through the picture library of the year, there are some things to highlight.

So I present, my list of 2011 favorite things:

{FAVORITE PARTY}

Although we entertain a lot, my favorite gathering of friends from 2011 occurred during the first few moments of the year. Nothing kicks off a year better than to be surrounded by those you love. I remember looking around as my parents, dear friends, our children, and my sweet husband rang the start of 2011 in our new outdoor den.

{FAVORITE SURPRISE}

The weather surprised us many times in 2011. Definitely one of our favorite times was gathering with our neighborhood pals for a huge sledding party. This picture is with my childhood sled. It didn't work great in the southern, light, fluffy snow, but it made for great pics!

{FAVORITE FAMILY PICTURE}

Although it was taken at Grandma Dee's funeral, I love this picture of my family. It is the first one we have had taken in awhile and it is still the screen saver on my laptop. It makes me not miss them all so much!

{BEST GIRL}

There is no other picture taken that could sum up the complexities of my Lily girl and this year her personality has just blossomed. Although I can predict some difficult days ahead, I know I'm gonna dig being this girl's mom. She's a special kinda thing and I can't get enough.

After the death of my grandmother in January, I felt this screaming and yelling of my soul telling me that I needed to write. Of course, I couldn't do it alone. We gathered the troops and headed to a place where we could stay in PJs all day and take in some quality "girltime". Definitely one of my favorite moments of the year.

{FAVORITE BIRTHDAY BOY}

He wanted to celebrate his Kentucky Wildcats so all we needed was a gym, some balls, and a bunch of great friends. This pic was taken as he displayed his moves during the dance competition.

{BEST PLAYDATE}

This pic was taken outside the Children's Museum in Wilmington, NC. The kids and I had a great visit with the Hurleys for Spring Break complete with a walk on the dock, catching crab, beach play, and lots of fun pics. Of course I loved the pineapple salsa from Flaming Amy's and fish tacos from K38!

This pic was taken by my dear friend, Leslie, on JoJo's dock, which is one of my favorite places. It makes me happy every time I look at it.

What better way to celebrate another year of life than with fish tacos from Taco Mamacita and a beautiful group of ladies and their wonderful husbands (not pictured)?

We had a wonderful Easter weekend with Robbie's parents. All year long, Papaw has been working on a treehouse for the kids. This was the first weekend of construction. Of course, we cleaned up and took time out to celebrate our risen savior.

{FAVORITE VACATION}

Robbie and I celebrated 10 years of marriage on the beaches of Mexico. This was our first trip without friends or family.

Another great weekend on Dale Hollow Lake with Robbie's college buds and their wives.

Our first spring at the ballpark was a complete blast, especially with daddy as a coach and me as a scorekeeper.

I am not sure what goes on there, but Robbie, his brother, Adam and their buddies have a great time at K Day weekend in Paintsville every year.

What a great weekend in Gatlinburg celebrating 40 years of marriage with Papaw and Mamaw including a great dinner at the Dixie Stampede.

This year Tate and Daddy kept working on their golf game while Lily acted as the best caddy and ate all the snacks.

{MOST MEMORABLE}

The first day of school was extra special this year as our baby went to Kindergarden.

{BEST LAUGH}

The annual girls' weekend is always jam-packed with laughs, but this particular weekend had an added twist. 10 girls and a double-decker pontoon boat on Dale Hollow Lake created a perfect scene for the greatest comedy of the year.

{MOST CHANGE}

To mom's dismay, Tate decided it was time to cut of his strawberry blonde locks.

The kids always try to keep their candy away from daddy on Halloween. This year, they not only had to hide the candy, but they were competing for "Best Costume" too. Although daddy looked cute as Derek Dooley, he was beaten by the Midnight Butterfly and Darth Vadar.

{FAVORITE TRADITION}

It's been several years since I have spent Thanksgiving in New York, but not a thing has changed.

There's still plenty of food, family and fun to go around.

If you look smack in the middle of the picture, you will see my husband holding three very happy kids. This year the annual Kentucky vs. Tennessee ended in sweet victory. My husband and kids were celebrating for one reason, but I was happy for a completely different one.

As Eleanor Roosevelt says, "Happiness is not a goal, it is a by-product of a life well lived." Indeed it is.

I don't say it often enough, but I feel it all the time. I am the luckiest girl in the world to share this life with him.

That word means a lot to me right now...WHOLE. I needed to write, so I gotta out of town. Thankfully, I had some friends follow my bread crumbs to one of my most inspirational places. There are not many people that understand the nuances of Autumn, but these ladies...they get it.

I sat in the sun feeling the wind blowing through my hair. I was pretty excited that I had actually written the intro to my book. I had focus and purpose with my writing like never before. And then the greatest thing happened...a spontaneous dance party...right there in the great wide open!!! Little house on the prairie will never be the same again...

Thank you to Turner, James, Mish, DDK, Lou Lou, Doc Mondi, and the Dirty Librarian for loving me, filling me and making me WHOLE. And thanks to my husband for knowing how much I needed it and making it happen. And of course, thanks to Warren for allowing us a slice of his mountain retreat.

I love this picture. It is a picture of my dad's young family. I think its amazing to see the foundation of something that means so much to me now.

I made fun of my mom for hunting all of us down to take a family picture before we left NY. Its the first picture we've taken as a family in over a year. Now that I have it, I find myself staring at it and feeling a huge sense of pride. It makes me feels such warmth knowing that I am part of something bigger than I am.

Its hard to explain. I have a hard time describing this feeling to anyone. It's almost a numb, yet sensitive part of me that I don't recognize. Simply said...I miss her.

I didn't get to see her very often, but knowing she was there gave me a settled spirit. I've spent the past few weeks trying to get back to my "ole" self, but the sadness seems to stay much longer than I expected.

My Beautiful Grandma Dee

This week I travelled to NY to celebrate the life of my beautiful Grandma Dee who passed away. I was honored to deliver the eulogy at her funeral. As you can read below, she was one sensational lady.

Dolores Willemsen had five children with her husband, Ike. Setting aside fear of sounding like one of those really old books in the bible, allow me to introduce myself and a few others. I am the oldest grandchild, Autumn Willemsen O’Bryan, daughter of the oldest son, Russ and his wife, Paulette. I am married to Robbie and have a son, Tate and a daughter, Lily. I have two brothers, Tony and Rusty. Tony is married to Heidi and has two sons, AJ and Jaxson and Rusty, who recently married Sarah. My Uncle Dennis is 18 months younger than my dad and my Aunt Karen is the middle child and has one daughter, Emily. My Uncle Brian has a son, Nick and a daughter, Jacqueline. The baby of the family is my Aunt Becky who has two daughters, Ashley who recently wed her husband, Jamie and her daughter Skylar. Allison is the youngest grandchild and has a daughter, Jade and is expecting a son to be named Wesley.

Total that up and you have five children, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. It is impossible to talk about the legacy of my grandmother and not mention these people. In fact, the greatest definition of her legacy sits before you today.

She would hate this. Seriously…think about it. She would hate every second of this. A group of people, sitting around talking about her. Even worse? Shedding tears…We had a hard enough time getting her to let us take her to a Mother’s Day lunch. I wish adults viewed death the same way children do. When I asked my 5 and 6 year old what I should say about GG, I was reminded of childlike faith. My son said he’s excited because now she can watch his baseball games whenever she wants. My daughter had a more practical approach. She said, “She will be really happy because she is finally with Jesus and back with PopPop.”

I wish I had the same innocent thoughts but like most adults, death is hard, and I find myself really sad at the thought of never talking with her again. My mother often compares me to my grandmother as I often skirt away from emotional matters. It is not for lack of feeling that I do, but I am extremely private about matters of the heart. Grandma Dee is definitely a matter that is my heart. I have been blessed to be raised by a group of strong women…grandmas, aunties, and of course, my lovely mother. I mean this as no disrespect to any of them when I tell you that Grandma Dee had one of the greatest amount of influence on the woman you see standing before you.

For the past several years, I have dabbled in and out of writing a book. It is not lack of commitment that the book is not finished, it simply needs some undivided attention and focus. The book focuses on women in leadership, “Modern Day Eleanors”, as I like to call them, after one of my favorite historical figures, Eleanor Roosevelt. With your permission, I’d like to read an excerpt from a chapter I wrote entitled, Do One Thing Everyday That Scares You.

“Do one thing everyday that scares you”… these words were spoken by the ultimate risk taker, none other than Mrs. Roosevelt herself. It reminds me of one of my most favorite days in my life. In March 2002, my mom and dad flew to Orlando, FL with my grandparents to watch me coach in a softball tournament at Disney World. When we weren’t playing, we spent the day touring the theme parks with the team. What started out as a bet over ice cream sundaes, turned in to me standing in line waiting to ride the Rockin’ Rollercoaster, with you guessed it???? My Grandma Dee. She was so excited and you could tell from the look on her face that she was even prouder to be a 72 year old grandma waiting in line to ride a pretty intense coaster. I remember as we sat down in our “rocket”, she turned to me with a beam in her eye and said, “Are ya ready?” I remember praying through the whole ride that this wouldn’t be her last ride. When the car stopped, she turned with a big smile on her face and said, “Wanna go again?”

That was my Grandma. She had a zest for life that was unmatched. The twinkle in her eye and the glimmer in her smile were so alive with a sincere love for the life she was living. Like I said earlier, Grandma had a tremendous influence over the woman I am today. I remember one time specifically where I think Grandma probably chuckled a bit as she saw her “zest” manifested through her eldest grandchild.

Grandma would tell the story so poignantly, so I hesitate to even attempt, but I will try. It started as a lazy July afternoon many years ago. Grandma was working in the house and I was laying on a lawnchair, by the pond, reading a book. Grandma would come to the laundry room window to check on me through the afternoon. One time, she walked up to the window, scanned the yard to find me and then she stopped. I can only imagine her eyes bulging out of her head as she spotted me standing buck naked on the diving board. Yep, that was me, the pastor’s kid and oldest grandchild, standing as free as a bird as I practiced a classic swan dive into the pond. Grandma would admit that she stood for several attempts watching this spectacle of a sight skinny dipping in her grandparents’ pond.

Yesterday, as several people came through the line and expressed their condolences, I heard the same thing, over and over again. “They broke the mold when they made that one.” I have to agree.

Vivacious…Alive…Passionate…Intuitive

I am sure that every grandchild sat through a Wednesday night planning session where Grandma would comb through the classifieds and plot her course for the garage sales over the next few days. Each one of us sat in the passenger seat, her co-pilot, as we would read each advertisement for yard sales, garage sales, estate sales, moving sales…any kind of sale. I would love to hear Grandma’s reaction as she would get super excited about beating “the others” to the sale. You couldn’t help but get excited with her. The day always ended with a smile and a treasure from Grandma’s coin purse. For me, the treasure was in her laugh. I just loved to hear her so happy. It made me feel like the luckiest girl in the world.

One of my last memories where Grandma and Grandpa were both healthy, was at my wedding. I had dreamed my entire life that Grandma Dee would make my wedding dress like she had made my mothers. Imagine the complication as we mailed sample patterns 800 miles for me to try on and have pinned. As a matter of fact, I never even tried the actual dress on until two days before my wedding and amazingly, it fit perfectly. That was a gift that my grandmother gave to me that I could never repay. There is never a time that I look at my wedding picture that I don’t think of her.

The last time I had a conversation with Grandma was on Christmas Eve. Anyone that has spent any amount of time with me knows that I love Christmas and the reason I love Christmas is because of my Grandma Dee. On Christmas Eve, I spoke with Grandma about my Christmas Day menu. I asked her advice and she praised me for being bold and serving Italian on Christmas Day. It gave me such joy this year, to host my family, in my newly renovated home, for the holidays. I set the table, cooked all day, and absorbed every moment of love I could possibly get. Just like Grandma Dee always did for us.

After the visitation last night, I walked with my cousins, Jacqueline and Emily, to get a bite to eat. We all agreed that our sense of loss lies simply in the fact that we will never be able to hear her practical words again. I know there will be days when the water is boiling and the veggies are still firm, and I need to hear her words. It is those moments that I will miss her most.

I know the gifts that she gave to me will last a lifetime and her legacy lives on in all of us. For me, it’s a love for the kitchen, the hunt for the ultimate deal, and a zest for all things alive. I can only hope to maintain the legacy that she has left for me. Whether my book ever comes to fruition, I know one thing for sure…there is quite a bit of Dolores in this Modern Day Eleanor.

One of the reasons Robbie and I decided to remodel our house instead of dropping the price and buying new was because we just love our neighborhood.

We moved here before Tate was born and it's wonderful watching all of our kids get older.

We woke up to a winter wonderland. It took a few hours for everyone to brave the outdoors, but once they started, the whole neighborhood appeared to take on "The Big Hill".

We tried my childhood sled from Grandpa Ike, but it just couldn't compete with the "newer" models.

My kids loved riding with the older kids down the hill and soon enough, they were venturing out on their own. Even the adults took our own trips down.

It's great to be a kid again!!!

The life of a basketball coach means a short break for Christmas, so we loaded up the car and headed to Cookeville to cheer on Bobo. As luck would have it, the University of Tennessee was playing that night so that were many boosters to enjoy the Skybox.

I was blessed with two babies who were great sleepers. There are days (like today) where Lily will still take a 3 hour nap. There is nothing I love more than watching my babies sleep. It is a time when all of the commotion of the world is calm and they can rest their souls.

Although we stayed busy, there were still many moments of tranquility filled with Christmas music, warm cookies, or a snuggle from the kiddos.

On Christmas Eve, I went around the house to check locks and turn out lights. Right before I tucked myself in, I stepped outside to check for snow and took a moment of pause. The air was crisp and the night was still. I couldn't help but think of that night so long ago when the world stood still, for just a time, gazing at the light of the world.

One of my favorite Christmases I visited my dad's parents from Tennessee. We chopped down my own tree, baked cookies, built Gingerbread houses and did all of the other things that go along with Christmas tradition. Although these were all memorable, the moment that I hold closest to my heart happened under the twinkle of Christmas lights.

I will always celebrate Christmas as it was modeled for me by my Grandma D. We always felt like a guest of honor for the holidays. You could count on good food, yearly traditions, presents for everyone, and most importantly, enough love to go around.

My mom often compares me to Grandma D because I don't show emotion, but I know her secret. She gave me love in her own way...a dimpled smile, a deep laugh, a twinkle in her eye, or a warm place on her lap.

If I could share one thing with my kids, it would be to love others as Christ loved us. There were many moments throughout this holiday that I saw that lesson coming through in them.

My parents blessed me this year by sharing that Christmas love in my home. I could never repay them for building a lasting tradition with my children that they will never forget.

This Christmas was unlike any other. We found out just before Thanksgiving that Tate was going to have his tonsils removed. This called for a slight change of plans due to recovery time and limited travel orders from the doctor.

The day before Tate's surgery, we had a special guest arrive on our front porch.

The book that accompanied told us he would visit until Christmas Eve. Each night, he would fly to the North Pole to update Santa on the status of the "Naughty List". When he returned, he would bring a small treat to celebrate the season (and comfort the patient).

As we all know, Tate comes up with some pretty strange names (i.e. Bobo, Iggs, Red). Given the challenge of naming our elf, he came up with the most perfect name...MIRACLE. Every morning the kids had to find Miracle and the gifts he brought with him.

We enjoyed our visit from Miracle and the gifts he shared. Among the favorites included slippers, pajamas, santa cups, and Pez dispensers. We are looking forward to many years celebrating the holidays with Miracle.

A few years ago, Tate gave his Papaw a book on how to build a treehouse and he has been asking about that treehouse ever since. Now that construction on the main house is done, we decided it was time to make Tate's dream a reality. The plans include a 12 x 12 space with an 8 foot ceiling.

Over Thanksgiving, the boys gathered the old deck lumber and started to lay the foundation. Robbie kept saying he was going to have to take out another mortgage with all the plans Tate and Papaw were making while they were working. Can't wait to see how it turns out...

It's as if something just clicked. Over the years, I have struggled watching Tate grow into his own skin. His lack of confidence and sometimes awkwardness would yank my heartstrings to a point of complete discomfort. As we all know, the Lord hears every mother's prayers. Over the past few months, Tate has settled into such a beautiful place. He enjoys school (finally), has made some friends, and loves art, Kentucky basketball, and his family.

I have always said he would change the world. I am so honored to witness that change one step at a time.

Every Friday home game, we gather at the lunch table at school to celebrate Game Day. It is a great way to end the work week and catch up with each other in a subdued, but brief encounter. Each one of these "special" Thursday nights, I love to come up with a creative recipe to bring to work. On this particular Thursday night, I was super proud of my chili, born from a bowl of soaking beans and some tomato paste.

After 6 hours on the stovetop, it was even better poured over a hotdog at lunch the next day. Yummy!

I remember that moment distinctively. I was looking out our apartment window on Parrish Street crying my 1st grade eyes out. My mom was genuinely concerned since it was not like me to cry. I finally fessed up and told her the reason for my sadness. "Noone will ever want to marry me," I blurted through my sobs. "I have the most stupid name of all names." At least that's what my classmates had convinced me of.

We all know the traditional meaning of my name {the season between summer and winter}, but I really love the second definition. This time of year, my soul moves in a way that feels organic. It is a state for which I know will pass, so I cling to it so as not to let it leave too quickly. It feels miles away from the little girl who lacked confidence or vision, for it is in these months that I find the most clarity. I wouldn't say that I have reached "full maturity" (although I do see a few more wrinkles on the picture above), but as my mother would say, "my cup runneth over." Maybe finding that man who didn't mind my "stupid name" has something to do with it.

Well its been almost 3 weeks since I've blogged, but I have remained faithful to my commitment to words. That's right in the most rustic of forms, I have taken to the ole pen and paper.

So to close up my Fall Break, I thought I'd catch my readers up...

The return from Girls Weekend always leaves me quite conflicted. On one part, I am fulfilled and on the other, I am exhausted. My mind feels as if it is split in two. Part of me wishes I could go back to the circle of trust and the other part of me is happy to return to my "normal".

I didn't have much time to recover. My first night back, I had a board meeting. I arrived a few minutes late so I duck into a seat behind the sound booth.

I am a sucker for details. I have to spend most of my days in the "big picture" world so I revel in the moments that I can pay attention to the little things. Now, if you look closely at my son's picture of me, you see two prominent circles right below my very large ears. There are some classic punchlines that one could insert here and trust me we have well covered this territory.

Actually, according to my dear friend who specializes in play therapy, this perspective shows that he sees me as one who nurtures and one who listens. I think I prefer that explanation more than the punchlines.

There is one small, teensy detail in this picture that one might miss. The conveyance of this detail is the one thing that I want as part of my children's perspective when they think of me. Carefully placed on my left ring finger..the symbol that is my primary role in this lifetime. I am so glad he didn't overlook that one...
